Quantitative near-infrared spectroscopy on patients with peripheral vascular disease

چکیده
We have used near-infrared spectroscopy to measure the hemoglobin saturation at rest and during exercise on patients affected by peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The instrument used in our study is a frequency-domain tissue oximeter which employs intensity modulated (110 MHz) laser diodes. We examined 9 subjects, 3 of which were controls and 6 were patients affected by stage II PVD. The optical probe was located on the calf muscle of the subjects. The measurement protocol consisted of: (1) baseline (~5 min); (2) stationary bicycle exercise (~5 min); (3) recovery (~15 min). The change in hemoglobin saturation during exercise (ΔY) and the recovery time after exercise (trec) were significantly greater in the PVD patients (ΔY = −21±3%, trec = 5.9±3.8 min) than in the control subjects (ΔY = 2±3%, trec = 0.6±0.1 min).

Postocclusive reactive hyperemia in healthy volunteers and patients with peripheral vascular disease measured by three noninvasive methods.
Postocclusive reactive hyperemia (PORH) was evaluated in three healthy volunteers and in three patients with different etiologies and suffering from peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Three noninvasive methods were used: transcutaneous oximetry (TcPO2), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Changes in perfusion and oxygenation of tissue were measured o...

OBJECTIVES (1) To review the available information on mitochondrial function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) obtained by non-invasive phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)PMRS), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in vivo and respirometry on mitochondria isolated from muscle biopsies in vitro (2) to evaluate the usefulness of such data in the di...
متن کاملQuantitative Analysis of Peripheral Tissue Perfusion Using Spatiotemporal Molecular Dynamics
BACKGROUND Accurate measurement of peripheral tissue perfusion is challenging but necessary to diagnose peripheral vascular insufficiency. Because near infrared (NIR) radiation can penetrate relatively deep into tissue, significant attention has been given to intravital NIR fluorescence imaging. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We developed a new optical imaging-based strategy for quantitative ...
متن کاملNear-infrared spectroscopy for monitoring peripheral tissue perfusion in critically ill patients.
Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique that allows determination of tissue oxygenation based on spectro-photometric quantitation of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin within a tissue. This technique has gained acceptance as a tool to monitor peripheral tissue perfusion in critically ill patient. NIRS principle is based on the use of near-infrared electromagnetic waves for qualitati...
متن کاملNear-Infrared Spectroscopy System for Monitoring Peripheral Vascular Disease
In this project, a non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy system is developed. It is tailored to monitor tissue oxygenation and total hemoglobin concentration in the limbs. The system would be especially useful in diabetic patients where blood circulation is poor in the extremities, and oxygenation is lower limiting the ability of the tissue to have proper function. It is crucial to monitor hi...
